Michael Bastian Spring 2016 Review

Michael Bastian is known for his now iconic take on menswear: preppy, luxurious, chic, and sexy, yet easy and modern, rugged, and very fun. His collection presentations, styled with care and precision, read as a high-gloss Slim Aarons photo come to life. And you might extrapolate upon the famous Aarons quote and conclude that Mr. Bastian produces attractive clothes for attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.

Included within the s/s mens collection, and a first for Mr. Bastian, we see womenswear. This is a category that has long been rumored to be in development -- and loyal fans have been eager to see. However, the women's looks that were included came across as mere accessories to the main event, and were much less of a statement themselves than perhaps many had hoped to see. The pieces shown were typically preppy, chic and modern, but generally felt very basic both individually and in totality. Then again, the designer chose to show a capsule of just 9 looks within this mens show, so perhaps the range and statement for the Bastian woman will be forthcoming. The move certainly has my curiosity peaked.

Michael took his very East Coast influenced man west for s/s 16, drawing inspiration from the glamour of old Hollywood. An exceptional banana-leaf camo print tied everything together with perfected looks that mixed formal and athleisure. Another gorgeous, lust-worthy collection from Michael Bastian.
